LSIS celebrates 12 new Beacons
At a special ceremony held in London on 6 July 2009, Kevin Brennan, minister for further education, skills and apprenticeships presented Beacon status awards to 12 outstanding further education and skills providers. Among the new Beacons are a wide range of providers, including general further education and sixth form colleges, work-based learning providers, adult and community learning providers and the first offender learning provider to gain Beacon status

Beacon forum
The annual Beacon Forum takes place on the 5 and 6 November. The Forum is an opportunity for Beacons to network, and to participate in workshops and presentations. The theme of this year's event will be around equality and diversity issues, with the current working title, 'Minimising Barriers, Maximising Opportunities'. Two of this year’s keynote speakers will be Asha Khemka from West Nottinghamshire College and Robin Landman from the Network for Black Professionals. LSIS's new chief executive; David Collins, will also be attending.

Open Door Adult Learning Centre celebrated at Learning and Skills Awards 2009
Open Door Adult Learning Centre were among employers and individuals from Yorkshire and the Humber, who showed they are top of the class in the field of learning at the prestigious Celebration of Learning and Skills (CoLaS) Awards ceremony. CoLaS 2009 highlights achievements of both individuals and employers who are succeeding regardless of the gloomy economic climate.

157 Group case studies
The 157 Group has published six case studies describing how member colleges are working with local people and businesses to help them find creative solutions to the challenges they face and capitalise on new opportunities. The case studies include innovative work being done by three Beacon organisations: City and Islington College, City of Bristol College and West Nottinghamshire College.
